Scarves and Shawls
Silk
Silk has a rich and interesting history. Worldwide, it has been considered one of the most luxurious natural fabrics for centuries. It is the strongest natural fibre with four main types of natural silk produced around the world. Mulberry silk represents about 90% of silk production, with the mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mori) generally thought to be the highest quality. Our silk scarves are made with Mulberry silk.
Background on some of our silk fabrics and blends:
- Silk Habotai: A plain-weave, soft and lightweight silk fabric with a smooth and glossy finish. Habotai is a Japanese word for ‘soft as down’. Silk Habotai is 100% silk.
- Silk Twill: A light or mid-weight silk fabric, with a smooth and shiny surface, made with a classic Twill weave. Silk Twill is 100% Silk.
- Silk Wool: Wool and silk blend fabrics offer the best of the qualities of both. Silk holds colour very well, creating vivid yarns that are combined with wool's warm and structured qualities. This gives the material a great handle, but soft to the touch. Our Silk Wool scarves are 40% Silk / 60% Wool
- Silk Bamboo: Bamboo is a popular, natural fiber, well known for it’s eco-friendly growing and soft resilitent texture. Our Silk Bamboo scarves are 25% Silk / 75% Bamboo
- Silk Cotton: Everyone is familiar with cotton; it’s comfortable and breathable, soft and natural and hypoallergenic. Our Silk Cotton blend scarves are sheer with 30% Silk / 70% Cotton
- Silk Modal & Silk: 85% Silk Modal / 15% Silk
Silk Modal: Modal silk threads are not obtained from worm-woven cocoons; they are human-made fibers made of beech tree wood. Modal fabric is extremely hard-wearing and keeps its shape and finish, even after frequent washing. Its silky texture also makes it comfortable for close-fitting intimate wear and is breathable. Modal silk is wholly natural, biodegradable, and sustainable. It is made from the wood pulp of renewable beech trees. Our Silk Modal scarves are soft and translucent with a truly elegant feel.
Momme Weight
Unit of measurement that describes the weight of silk fabric. Mommes express the weight in pounds. The word momme is pronounced ‘mummy’ and is indicated by the symbol ‘mm’.
